The 644th Combat Communication Squadron is a component of the 36th Contingency Response Group and an essential resource for United States Air Force leadership in responding to the growing number of fast-moving contingency deployments the Air Force experiences in the Pacific area of responsibility.
Their mission is to rapidly deploy combat Airmen and communications support in response to contingencies in INDOPACOM (U.S. Indo-Pacific Command), one of six geographic unified combatant commands of the United States Armed Forces, headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii. Their vision is to lead an expeditionary communications force enabling agile, resilient, survivable, and interoperable C5ISR capabilities across INDOPACOM.
We were appointed to build a one-of-a-kind challenge coin for the 644th CCS. They requested something unique: an ellipse-shaped coin with pointed ends, similar to a football, with a small rectangular banner along the bottom.
The base design features a map of the INDOPACOM area, crossed Gurkha knives, and the flags of the United States and Guam on one side of the coin. The opposite side features the mascot of the 644th CCS, the Dragon.
Because the overall design is relatively clean, the details needed to be produced precisely. That included the embossed lettering, etched map lines, flag details, and the tribal-styled dragon artwork.
For the surface, we used a glossy metallic black finish with red accents across much of the coin, while additional colors were reserved for the flags and mascot to keep those elements distinct.
Projects like this are a good example of how custom Air Force challenge coins can incorporate unit insignia, geographic references, mission-related imagery, flags, mascots, and other elements tied directly to a squadron’s identity.
