The story behind the coin

Diplomatic Security Service challenge coins are small medallions with imagery and logos representing the U.S. Diplomatic Security Service. Military members, first responders, and certain government agencies use challenge coins to commemorate their service, celebrate achievements, and bond with fellow servicemembers.

The coins’ “challenge” aspect comes from a game military members would play within their squads. When a soldier called a coin check, every soldier would need to show that their medallion was on their person; if they couldn’t, they’d buy drinks for the challenger and everyone who did present their coin.

DSS Seal

The DSS seal depicts a laurel and olive wreath, signifying merit and peace. Thirteen gold stars represent Congress, while the rays bursting from the center of the seal indicate a new organization. The dark blue of the DSS seal represents the United States, while the white background commemorates service achievements.

Depicting this seal on your Diplomatic Security challenge coins instantly distinguishes coin holders as part of the Bureau of Diplomatic Security.

DSS Motto

You can also consider adding the DSS motto, “Protect, Secure, Investigate,” to your custom challenge coins to keep your organization’s mission as a central focus.

Service Years
If you are commemorating your years in service or gifting challenge coins to fellow agency members, consider including the number of service years on the coin.
