The story behind the coin

The history of challenge coins in the U.S. dates back to World War I, when soldiers from the U.S. Army began carrying them around. Legend has it they were first used as a form of identification for American soldiers who found themselves behind enemy lines. Before long, they inspired a challenge coin game complete with its own rules.

Over time, the tradition spread beyond the military. The original challenge coins inspired law enforcement challenge coins, firefighter challenge coins, and even Congressional challenge coins.

Today, custom Congressional challenge coins are designed to honor the 100 U.S. senators who make up the U.S. Senate and the more than 400 voting members in the House of Representatives. They are routinely given in recognition of notable accomplishments within Congress and carry a certain prestige not always found in other challenge coins.
