The Chief of the Boat (COB) on a U.S. Navy submarine is the senior enlisted advisor to the commanding officer, responsible for the welfare, morale, and training of the enlisted crew. On the USS Texas (SSN-775), a Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine commissioned in 2006, the COB plays a crucial role in maintaining operational readiness and crew cohesion.

The current Chief of the Boat is Fire Control Technician Senior Chief (FTCS) Shane Adkins. His responsibilities include overseeing the daily operations of the enlisted personnel and ensuring that the submarine maintains its combat readiness. His main role is to act as the principal liaison between the commanding officer (CO) and the enlisted crew.

To commemorate the new Chief of the Boat appointment, we were asked to build them an elegant and one-of-a-kind challenge coin. Unlike the common challenge coin, which has a round shape, they wanted the coin to have the shape of a shield or badge. Other than that, all of the graphic elements and lettering applied to the surfaces of the coin would be the usual, like ones we see on a U.S. Navy badge or insignia.

From the photos, we can see that the shape of the coin was machined flawlessly. The aesthetic U.S. Navy images, such as the Navy’s anchor logo and the ‘Whatacob’ logo, were also embossed and engraved nicely by our technicians. The tiny lettering on both sides of the coin was also still readable.
