At Embleholics, we love a good challenge coin and we certainly appreciate a good beer, so when a Navy Chief’s Mess asked us to combine the two, we were happy to take on the project. The result was a custom Navy Chief Bottle Opener Challenge Coin designed to recognize newly minted Chief Petty Officers while incorporating some personality into the tradition.
A Navy Chief Challenge Coin Built Around the Beer Stein
On the front of the coin, a large beer stein becomes the centerpiece of the design. Different areas of the metalwork and color were used to give the glass additional depth, while the beer and foam add color to the design. A Chief Petty Officer symbol is prominently positioned in the center of the stein, tying the entire concept back to Navy Chief heritage.
The reverse side explains the purpose behind the coin: recognizing newly minted Chief Petty Officers. This allowed the coin to be both a fun design and something connected to an important milestone in a Sailor’s career.
Turning the Coin Into a Functional Bottle Opener
One of the most interesting parts of this project is how the bottle opener was incorporated directly into the design. Instead of making a standard round coin and adding a feature to it, the shape of the coin itself was designed around the opener.
Functional features like bottle openers can be incorporated into many different challenge coin shapes. The artwork, text, symbols, and overall silhouette can then be designed around that opening so the finished piece still looks and feels like a challenge coin.
For a Chief’s Mess, squadron, ship, command, or other Navy organization, this gives you another option beyond the traditional round coin while still leaving plenty of room for Navy symbols, ratings, warfare insignia, mottos, names, and other meaningful elements.
Creating Your Own Navy Chief Bottle Opener Challenge Coin
You don’t need to have finished artwork before starting a project with us. Looking at other challenge coins can be useful for figuring out what styles, shapes, features, and design elements you like. From there, you can bring us your own symbols, ideas, sketches, photographs, or existing unit artwork and we can develop them into an original design.
