Yes. A challenge coin can be made entirely without enamel, relying on sculpted relief, plating and finish to carry the design. These are often the best-looking coins we produce.

Monochrome works because it removes the thing that most often makes a coin look cheap. Colour draws the eye to flat fields, while a coin without it is judged on depth, line work and finish, which are the parts that feel like craftsmanship in the hand.

What carries a colourless design:

  • Relief. 3D sculpting gives shadow and modelling that colour would otherwise flatten.
  • Antique finish. Oxidation settles in the recesses so engraved detail reads as high contrast.
  • Dual plating. Two metal tones separate elements of the design without any enamel.
  • Edge and texture treatments. Surface finishes distinguish areas from one another.

It suits some subjects more than others. Technical and industrial designs, aerospace and engineering programmes, special operations insignia, and anything where restraint is the point all tend to read better without colour. A design built around a brightly coloured crest usually does not.

There is a budget argument too. Removing enamel removes fill operations, so a monochrome coin at a given size and quantity often costs less than a multi-colour one while looking more considered.
