Navy 1st Class Petty Officer Coin

Navy 1st Class Petty Officer Coin

Navy 1st Class Petty Officer Coin

First Class Petty Officer or PO1 is the third of the Navy’s Petty Officer grades and serves as a non-commissioned officer. It is the sixth enlisted rate in the United States Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard, ranking just above petty officer second class and directly below chief petty officer.

A Petty Officer First Class serves both as a leader and as a technical expert, and all Petty Officers have a specified rating or job. They are often chosen to serve as the Leading Petty Officer (LPO) of a division, and the leadership experience demonstrated through this position is often used to choose sailors for promotion to Chief Petty Officer. Petty Officer First Class is the 6th rank in the United States Navy, ranking above Petty Officer Second Class and directly below Chief Petty Officer.

This custom challenge coin was ordered from us as a commemorative coin for the Leadership Symposium event held in Seattle for the First Class Petty Officers. They asked for something that resembles a compass, with a lot of small ornaments and details that are very Navy oriented.

As you can see in the photos, we use blue paint as the base color of the coin, with a white circle as an accent. And with the only US Flag painted in colors, everything else was left unpainted and finished with matte brass color.

The logistics specialist (LS) is a US Navy enlisted rating that was created on 1 October, 2009 by the merger of the storekeeper (SK) and postal clerk (PC) ratings. Logistics specialists are primarily tasked with maintaining military supply stores. Their responsibilities generally include open purchasing and procurement, shipping and receiving, inventory management, and issue of equipment, repair parts, tools, consumable items, hazardous materials or anything else obtained through the naval supply system.

We were requested to design and produce a custom challenge coin for their LSCS (SW/AW) Dante M. Castillo. The design concept itself is not an extravagant one, just a usual challenge coin, but they wanted to have an elegant and distinguished looking coin that he could be proud of. So we needed to make sure that we put everything in the right place, using the matching letterings, and picking the best looking material for the coin and choosing what colors to be used on it.

We decided that we only use minimum colors and paint on this coin, so the depth of the design would shaped by the different tone of the brushed material’s surface. Also we applied strong patterns such as diamond plate and checkered squares which gives the coin a compelling accent.

Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) and the Supply Corps conduct and enable supply chain, acquisition, operational logistics and Sailor & family care activities with our mission partners to generate readiness and sustain naval forces worldwide to prevent and decisively win wars. With headquarters in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and employing a diverse, worldwide workforce of more than 22,500 military and civilian personnel.

NAVSUP and the Navy Supply Corps share one mission: to conduct and enable supply chain, acquisition, operational logistics and Sailor & family care with our mission partners to generate readiness and sustain naval forces worldwide to prevent and decisively win wars. We did our best to design and to craft the custom challenge coin commissioned by them, so it could represent the mission & vision of NAVSUP. This challenge coin was presented by the Commanding Officer, and we made sure that everything is executed flawlessly.

From the brass-colored base material with brushed finish, the background on both sides of the coin with graphical details and colors, to the small sized insignias and letterings which needed to be engraved without error so they can still be read, all of them are manufactured precisely.

Recently a customer asked us to make a nice cutout coin for them and the Chief’s Mess of a squadron. They included a description of their coin being in the shape of a ships wheel as well as asked about including different images and symbols that they wanted in their coin, such as all three insignia for Chief Petty Officer ranks, warfare insignia, a Supply Corps rating symbol, and a small 3-d statue important to this Chief’s Mess. Chief challenge coins are always fun to make because of the unique and deep heritage in the chief ranks, which also involves a lot of important symbolism.

Although this coin features a few 3-d figures, we have made entire coins that are 3-d, with parts of the cutout also textured and 3-d.

These are among some of the many Navy Chief challenge coins we’ve designed. Many of our coins have included other important symbolism as well, such as goats dressed in Chief’s khakis, coins shaped in a goat’s head or goat’s horns, even a lei around a goat’s neck. In addition, we have made Coast Guard Chief challenge coins as well.

If you are looking for ideas, just think about some of the key terms important to you or your organization. We can also take images of your ship and put them onto the coin as well.
